Unable to find it after days of searching, I knew I had to make a decision. OK, slight exaggeration, but I was highly affronted that this tomato-mauling caterpillar dared to take up residence in my tomato patch. I also discovered the presence of a horned tomato worm, which drove me into a murderous rage. Thus far, I’ve harvested five tomatoes - four yellow from the Lemon Boy vine, and one red Early Girl. Imagine, growing something that I also can consume. Those three tomato plants, plus one growing in an upside-down planter on the other side of the yard, are a source of great pride and entertainment for me. I peer through the foliage, checking for ripe fruits, trying to estimate how long it will be before the plump green orbs turn sunshine yellow or fire-engine red, and checking for unwanted visitors. But I am mesmerized.Įvery morning - and sometimes after work, too - I amble out to the little raised bed to inspect my tomato plants. ADMITTEDLY, MY LIFE is not exactly a whirlwind of social events surrounded by the most glamorous people on the planet, but even so, I’m a little surprised at how captivated I am by two rather mundane things: tomatoes growing in my backyard and a fava bean plant that has sprouted at my desk.Ī good portion of my day is spent observing these plants, which I suppose is something akin to watching paint dry.
